Defeated: Halion 25 HM
Posted by thideras | Filed under General Information
Just minutes ago, we have defeated Halion 25 in the Hard Mode difficulty. This fight is tuned extremely well and is akin to Anub’Arak 25 HM. Absolutely no mistakes can be made and no one can die. This is one of the few fights that can get me shaking after the kill. I love it.
Unfortunately, Fraps locked up and I was not able to record it.
I was able to record this week’s kill. It isn’t the original, but it is the second and still shows how we do it.

Unfortunately, I found myself in a position that I didn’t want to be in again: Not enjoying raids.
That being said, I’ve stepped down as an Unchained officer and decided to look for a new home. After applying to a few places, Enigma (Deathwing) decided to take me in. It just so happens that a previous Exodus member has been here since that guild breakup, Kanibal. It was actually not my intention to find him, so I chuckle a bit at that.
What does this mean for you guys? This is going to greatly free up my time that was stuck in managing the guild so I can write more. I haven’t written an article for my website in some time and I feel bad for neglecting readers. I haven’t decided on my first topic, so I’m open to input.

First off, this is just a simple guide to help friends I have who’re struggling to maximize their dps, and ultimately use it to help other druids they find along the way seeking knowlage like this. My refrences are Murna from Elitist Jerks(EU) and Tun from Ensidia(EU), both could be easily considered the best at what they do. I will also be adding my own personal opinion ontop of theirs and comparing their prefrences.
Mixed refrences on stats:
Hit cap: 263 (230 if alliance had have a draenei in group)
Expertise cap: 132
Stat break down as listed from Elitist Jerks forums.
Assuming all important feral talents and cat form . Numbers in brackets include Blessing of Kings.
Strength
1 Str = 2.37864 AP (2.616504 AP)
Agility
1 Agi = 1.18932 AP (1.308252 AP)
1 Agi = 0.0129744% Crit (0.01427184%)
77.05 (70.07) Agi = 1% Crit
Stamina
1 Sta = 10.812 (11.8932) Health
Critical Strike Rating
1 CritRating = 0.022% Crit
45.91 CritRating = 1% Crit
Crit Caps
4.8% of our white Crits will always be converted into white hits against bosses. We can’t reduce our chance to normally hit with white attacks below 4.8%.
Our Critchance with Yellow Attacks is reduced by 4.8% against bosses. But we actually CAN convert all our hits into crits.
76% – White crit cap (+ 24% Glancing Blows = 100%)
79.8% – Ferocious Bite Crit Cap (+ 25% Crit from Talent – 4.8% Crit Suppression = 100%)
104.8% – Yellow Crit Cap (- 4.8% Crit Suppression = 100%)
You have to subtract any avoided attacks from these caps. For example: If 4% of your attacks are avoided due to not reaching the Hit- and/or Expertisecap, then your white crit cap would be 72%.
Haste Rating
1 HasteRating = 0.030% Haste
32.79 HasteRating = 1% Haste
Hit Rating
1 HitRating = 0.030% Hit
32.79 HitRating = 1% Hit
Hit Cap vs lvl 80 targets: 5% Hit = 163.95 HitRating
Hit Cap vs lvl 83 targets: 8% Hit = 262.32 HitRating
Expertise Rating
1 ExpertiseRating = 0.030% less Chance of getting parried or dodged
32.79 ExpertiseRating = 1% less Chance of getting parried or dodged
8.2 ExpertiseRating = 1 Expertise
1 Expertise = 0.25% less Chance of getting parried or dodged
Expertise Cap vs lvl 80 targets: 5% (Dodge) / 5% (Parry) = 20 Expertise = 163.9 Expertise Rating
Expertise Cap vs lvl 83 targets: 6.5% (Dodge) / 14% (Parry) = 26 / 56 Expertise = 213.13 / 459.1 Expertise Rating
Since you should always attack from behind, your target can’t parry. Therefore you only need 26 expertise or 213.13 Expertise Rating.
But every serious Cat skills Primal Precision, which gives 10 Expertise or 81.97 Expertise Rating. So if you skill this talent, your cap will be:
Expertise Dodge-Cap vs lvl 83 targets and with Primal Precision: 16 Expertise = 131.16 Expertise Rating
Armorpenetration Rating
1 ArPenRating = 0.07145% ArmorPenetration
13.9957272 ArPenRating = 1% Armor Penetration
Hard Cap 1399.57272 ArP = 100% of the target’s armor are ignored
Important notes on hit / expertise value from EJ
“A question very often asked is, whether we need to be hit or expertise capped. The answer is: It depends on your DPS. Hit and expertise scale directly with your DPS. The better your gear gets, the higher the value of Hit/Expertise gets. When in blue gear, both contribute very little to your DPS. With Ulduar BiS, they are quite important, but still not the best stats. The same holds true for T9, although both are more important when you have really good T9 lvl Gear. When you have a lot of iLvl 264 Gear or higher from ICC, they turn out to be extremely good. Try to reach the caps then. Only ArP will be better (and only if you’re near the hard cap). Also, there is no such ‘magic threshold’. Both stats always have the same value (as long as below the hard cap), no matter if you have 0% hit, 3% hit or 5% hit. That means the two stats scale linear.
BUT – for a beginner it could be quite confusing missing a lot. Our DPS priority is already hard enough even without our attacks being dodged. It could mess up the DPS of a beginner, if his hit and/or expertise is too low. If you consider yourself weak at maintain a stable cycle, then more hit/expertise could help to stabilize it.” – Murna, Elitist Jerks
Ensidia’s version of the same.
“Alright, so my next point about hit/expertise was that it gets more and more valuable the closer to the crit cap you get. This should be fairly obvious by now, since the closer you get to crit cap the more often you’ll crit. If you miss an attack and you have 74.2% crit on your char sheet then you effectively just lost a crit. The closer you get to the crit cap the more you want to get hit/expertise capped, because it ensures more crits. Simple as that. Hit and Expertise aren’t insanely good stats unless you have a lot of crit though, but I’m not sure where the breakpoint is.” – Tun, Ensidia
My opinion on both.
I completely agree with them, as you wonder closer to that hard to obtain feral crit cap it becomes that more important for your hits to land. Miximizing your hits makes for less wasted hits on bosses, even though you’re refunded 80% of your energy from missed hits you still need to be trying for the hit cap. Wasted energy is wasted dps. That is as simple as it gets, every miss you make with lets say shred.. you might as well consider as – 1,000 to 2,000 damage on your next shred because you had to wait on your energy to regen enough for another shred.
10 shreds = 420 energy
10 shred misses = 90 energy lost, 90 energy being enough for 2 full shreds both averaging 15-17k if you’re arp capped.
Easily lost 30k damage minimum from that simple example. Not breaking down the numbers completely.. but you can see my point? Hit / expertise = good.
It’s like if you have a shot gun(heroic gear) and shoot it at someone, sure not all of it’s going to hit.. but who cares? it’s a shotgun you can just shoot it again and no have to worry. On the other hand though you have a big giant .50 cal sniper’s rifle (ICC 25 HM gear), your shots are deadly and can kill anything almost instantly… you’re going to be PISSED if one of them misses. This is the importance of hit, you don’t care if one of your little hits miss, but if something huge misses… it’s a giant loss in damage.
Now, onto your spec!
Murna from Elitist Jerks says:
“Maximum Single-Target DPS: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#0ZEMMsfrz0eo0huAkbAczb:VpmVzc
This spec takes every talent, that increases single target DPS. You’ve got one point left, possibilities could be: 4/5 Furor, 1/2 iLotP or 1/3 Feral Instinct
Maximum AoE-DPS: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#0ZxGMsfrz0eR0huAkbAczb:mpVczV
This spec only has 5 different points. You’ve got 3/3 Feral Instinct here and 2/2 iLotP. You could aswell take the two points out of iLotP and together with the last left point skill 3/5 Feral Aggression.
Actually Feral Swiftness and Survival Instincts don’t directly increase your damage. But they offer very significant survival tools. Additionaly, both allow you to DPS for a second longer here and there.
Tun from Ensidia Says:
“Spec 1: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#0ZeGMsfrz0eo0huAkbAczb:Vmp
Spec 2: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#0ZEGMcfrz0eR0huVkbAczb
Spec 1 is the spec I’ve been using for a long time now. It’s got AoE power, Survival Instincts and Improved Mangle. It’s a really good all-round spec, and my personal favorite. I don’t use FB much (if at all) so the 3/5 Feral Aggression is not a DPS loss at all for me. The 2nd spec is the best possible single target DPS spec. You get full Feral Aggression and you dump Improved Mangle to get 2/2 imp lotp. This spec requires an Arms warrior or another Feral, which is why I don’t like it.”
My opinion:
Both present valid reasonings behind the specs and why they use them, I personally like a little all around purpose to my spec so I made one for full aoe dps and full boss dps.
My spec: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#0ZEGMcfrz0eR0huVkbAczb:Vmp
I dropped imp mangle from this spec because I feel it is no longer needed seeing as how mangle last a full minute now. But specs are always subject to personal opinion and you should pick the spec you feel best suits you and your needs.
Cat claws, and how to swing’em properly! (Kitty dps rotations)
Murna from Elitist Jerks says:
“As there is no real rotation, we speak of a “priority list” for cat DPS. Try to follow the following instructions in the given order.
1. Keep up Savage Roar
2. Keep up Mangle
3. Keep up Rake
4. Use shred for CP regeneration (remember, that points 2 and 3 are more important)
5. When at 5 CP and Rip is not up, use Rip
6. When below 30 Energy, use TF
7. Use Clearcast Proccs for Shred
8. When at 5 CP and Rip and SR are running with 8 seconds (might be longer, depending on your gear) or longer each, use FB
9. When Rip and SR will drop at nearly the same time (with less than 3 seconds difference), try to recognize it early. Then use SR with a small amount of CP to desynchronize both timers.
10. Use Berserk only at high energy, (but not higher than 85) not directly after TF and as often as possible. If you will get Hysteria or some boss mechanics will enhance your damage, save it for these situations.
This priority list is quite hard to maintain. Cat DPS is one of the most complicated ones in PvE WoW. Try to remember these rules:
1. Remember: Savage Roar buffs everything; Mangle buffs bleeds and shred; Bleeds buff shred. That means, never shred without applying mangle and at least one bleeding.
2. It doesn’t matter how many CP you use for SR. Just make sure it never drops!
3. Use Rip and FB only with 5 CP
4. It is very tricky to squeeze in FB’s in your rotation. At first you should try to maximize SR, Mangle, Rip and Rake uptime (in this order). When you get more experienced, try to FB more. You need to guess how much time is needed for building up 5 CP’s – this depends on your crit chance. Usually, a FB is worth dropping Rip for 4 Ticks approx (8 seconds). Remember that after using Rip, you need energy for building at least one more CP to refresh SR if necessary.
5. FB is most efficient when used at 35 energy. It gets worse when you spend more, thus making it least efficient when using with 65 energy.
6. A 5 CP FB is always more efficient than a shred, even when used at 65 energy.
7. When using the shred glyph: When rake and rip are about to expire and you could shred to extend the rip duration for 2 more seconds at the cost of letting rake drop for 1-2 seconds – do it.”
Tun From Ensidia says:
“Alright, you have your gear, spec, glyphs etc. fixed. Now what’s left before you’re an awesome cat from hell? Obviously, which buttons to press and when to press said buttons. Usually if I get asked about my rotation I say “Bind Mangle, Rip, Shred, Savage Roar, Ferocious Bite and Berserk to random keys from 1-6, then roll your face from left to right. If your DPS drops, start hammering your face instead of rolling it.” I’m sure you’ve all seen the spreadsheets and the JOHN FUCKING MADDEN jokes. However, there is actually a little thought involved in DPSing as Feral.
Essentially, there’s no real rotation as such. There’s a prioritized list of skills and timers. If a timer is too low, it’s sometimes better to save some Energy to refresh it as soon as possible rather than just shredding on like a roidraging bodybuilder.
Here goes: You start off your rotation by doing Mangle, followed by a Rake. You then have enough energy spare to use Savage Roar, then you press Tiger’s Fury and you Shred once, then use Berserk. I realize Berserk overwrites Tiger’s Fury but it’s more important getting your rotation started properly and get Berserk on CD. At 5 CP you apply Rip to your target, then refresh Rake. That’s how I start fights. If you don’t crit for shit, you might have to reapply Rake before doing Rip (if you’re at 3 or 4 CP and Rake runs out without Rip being up). Basically it’s all about keeping stuff up. The most important thing to keep up is Savage Roar. After that it’s Rip. Savage Roar basically increases your dps by 33%. Never let it be down for even a second! After that, you just apply Rake and spam shred whenever the other stuff is up. If you have 5 CP and Rip and Savage Roar runs out at the same time (in less than 5 seconds) just wait. Apply Rip, quickly do Rake or Shred and do a 1-2 CP Savage Roar. It’s a balance to keep everything up, and it’s based on how many CP you produce and how much energy you have. Tiger’s Fury is very important. You should try and time it so you can just spam Shred when you use Tiger’s Fury. Remember, the effect from Tiger’s Fury is canceled if you do Berserk while it’s up.
As I said earlier, you can include Ferocious Bite in your rotation. If you have 10+ seconds on Rip and 10+ seconds on Savage Roar and YOU’RE ALREADY AT 5 CP you can do a Ferocious Bite. It involves some lucky crits and probably a Clearcast proc as well. Personally, I only use Ferocious Bite if I have Berserk active (so I can get enough CP and Energy to get the other stuff up and running again). Nowadays I don’t even FB with Berserk active though (because it’s energy ineffective), and you should only do this if you can get Rip refreshed within 6 seconds of it running out. It’s freak occurences that you can use FB and it’s a minimal gain. That’s why I prefer hardcapping, you don’t crit enough to spend CP on FBs ![]()
With that rotation, or priority of skills if you will, you can go give bosses the good news. But before going so DPS horny that you’d bang the crack of dawn, you must remember that getting buffed with Hysteria and Tricks of the Trade is awesome. If you can get away with it, make sure you get as much of it as you can. Pay the DK’s and Rogues if you have to. WE WANT MORE DPS! WE WANTS IT! Stupid selfish DK’s have specced Unholy now though, and they don’t tank anymore. Rogues only ToT each other. Leaving Ferals with fuck all. Fantastic.
If you need more ArP you use Hearty Rhino, otherwise you use one of the 40 agi foods. At least I think there’s more than one? Whatever, there’s a 40 agi food made from some fish.
The best DPS pot/flask is Endless Rage, which is the AP flask. Regardless of how stupid that sounds, adding another 180 AP to your 10000 AP is still the best for your overall DPS.”
My opinion:
So.. you’re probley looking at both feral rotation guides and going to Tun’s “TL:DR… “ welcome to the club. I personally didn’t read Tun’s rotation guide. So I will present mine in a priority form after showing you how I set up a fight like lets say.. Saurfang. Keep in mind, I do not get tricks, and don’t have a death knight who’s blood to beg for hysterria.
I start the fight off by watching my deadly boss mod timer for when combat starts, right when the timer hits 2 seconds (3 if I’m laggy that night) I drink a haste potion, making it so it’s off cooldown during the fight and can be used again. I open up with a mangle (or rake if there’s a arms warrior or feral tank) and instantly use my CP(s) for savage roar followed by berserk. Then putting it quite simply… I follow almost an identical priority list as Murna.
Epics and you! (Gear lists)
Murna from Elitist Jerks says:
“Which idol should I wear?
The best Cat Idol for single-Target DPS is [Idol of the Crying Moon]. But it takes 15 seconds after applying rake to reach its full effect. This is bad for encounters with DPS interruptions, like Anub’Arak or Lady Deathwisper. Additionally you normally don’t use rake on AoE situations.
The next best Cat Idol is [Idol of Mutilation]. This is only 20 Agi worse and there are many situations where it’s the better idol (like AoE or Trash).
After that, it depends.
If you have to mangle yourself, [Idol of the Corruptor] is BiS for you. If not, then it depends on your ArP. If you are below approx 250 ArP, [Idol of Worship] would be your choice, above that the [Idol of the Ravenous Beast] becomes better. But actually the Rip and Shred idol both grant very similar DPS – the difference is really low.
Which trinkets should I wear?
The [Darkmoon Card: Greatness] is in most gear setups one of the best trinkets. This will not be a useless investment, as it is an extremely good tanking trinket aswell. Although it’s quite old and has only iLvl200 it’s still really good and easily obtainable.
Some upgrades to the Card are [Herkuml War Token], [Death's Choice] (or [Death's Choice]), [Whispering Fanged Skull] (or [Whispering Fanged Skull])
The 2nd best Cat Trinket is [Deathbringer's Will] and of course the best one is [Deathbringer's Will]
In the second slot you should wear one of the three ArP trinkets mentioned above ([Grim Toll], [Mjolnir Runestone] or [Needle-Encrusted Scorpion]).
If you can reach high ArP numbers (About 1000 or above), try to swap your ArP trinket for one of the above mentioned (even the darkmoon card).
How good are our set bonuses?
The 2T7 bonus is very good. Although there are better items in every slot, the bonus outweighs this by far.
The 4T7 bonus is very bad.
The 2T8 bonus is extremely good. You really need to have this.
The 4T8 bonus is about as good as 2T7.
The 2T9 bonus is very good.
The 4T9 bonus is mediocre.
The 2T10 bonus is good.
The 4T10 bonus is extremely good.
Try to collect 2 T7 items first. Head and shoulder would be the best choice.
If you’re entering Ulduar, your first aim should be to get 2T7 + 2T8, which is VERY good.
If you can choose between 2T7 + 2T8 and 4T8, choose 4T8. You should notice a very small DPS increased, based on the higher iLvl of T8 (the 4T8 bonus is actually of the same value as 2T7).
Similar holds true if you enter Coliseum. 2T8 + 2T9 will be an upgrade to 4T8. And although the 4T9 bonus is worse than the 4T8 one, the higher item level of two more T9 items outweighs this.
But because the 4T9 itself isn’t that good, it’s probably better to wear 2T9 and some offsetpieces instead of 4T9.
The T10 bonuses are both really good, especially the 4pc. Combined with the high iLvl it means you really should wear 4T10.

REMEMBER!
BiS lists are not perfect. There may be items, which are bigger upgrades for you than items listed in this BiS list, because the rest of your gear looks different. Also some may consider Hit/Expertise more important and will gem for them in the yellow slots.
Don’t stick to this list without adjusting them for your own situation…
Both BiS lists were created with Rawr v 2.3.8.”
Tun from Ensidia says:
Ok, now you have your Hit/Expertise caps, you have your spec and you have your glyphs. It’s time to look at the rest of your gear. You want to get above 50% unbuffed crit chance. I SAY AGAIN; get 50% UNBUFFED crit chance. I’m tired of repeating that. Read it. Understand it. Embrace it. You need about 55% crit to keep a proper CP generation up, so you need just above 50% unbuffed for it to work. I’ve compiled a list of BiS gear. It’s still a work in progress, because you have to account for random drops you might not get, which is hard. Anyways, here is the list of items I hope I can get before hardmodes open:
Sanctified Lasherweave Headguard
Sindragosa’s Cruel Claw
Sanctified Lasherweave Shoulderpads
Sylvanas’ Cunning
Sanctified Lasherweave Raiment
Toskk’s Maximized Wristguards
Aldriana’s Gloves of Secrecy
Vengeful Noose
Sanctified Lasherweave Legguards
Icewalker Treads
Ashen Band of Endless Vengeance
Frostbrood Sapphire Ring
Herkuml War Token
Deathbringer’s Will
Twin’s Pact
Idol of Mutilation
I’ve made a wowhead profile with the enchants/gems as well: http://www.wowhead.com/profile=19832439
These items give you 1360 unbuffed ArP. The hard cap for ArP is 1400 so you’re at 100% passive ArP if you use Hearty Rhino. I’ve always preferred hardcapping because it suits my playstyle a lot better than softcapping. Softcapping is the fancy stuff where you value haste and blabla, screw that. Keep it simple. ArP and Crit, that’s the shit you want. Besides, the rotation goes from being annoying as hell to being fairly easy. You are going to drop a lot of crit hampering your CP generation so you can’t do FBs anymore. And be honest, which would you rather do? Work the hard way to achieve a minimal upgrade or go the lazy way and do even more dps? That’s right, pretty easy point!
I’ve made a BiS gear list with full hardmode gear as well but it’s totally pointless linking it seeing as none of us are ever going to get all of it. For the hell of it though, here it is: http://www.wowhead.com/profile=19832459
When it comes to gearing in ICC it’s very important you have your head on your shoulders and not under your arm. Before this section gets totally out of hand, I’ll just say that I want to hardcap ArP no matter what. I’m not going to even think about softcapping because I’ve always hated doing it. Use your head when thinking about upgrades. And for the seriously please wait with using Emblems of Frost until you can buy t10 set pieces. The 4 part bonus is the biggest damage boost we can get, so you want to get that before anything else.”
My opinion:
I will go ahead and list my best in slot gear below, listing beside them the gems I would use to get the most dps out of the gear. As well I will list the glyphs.
Head: Sanctified Lasherweave Headguard (277) With Relentless Earthseige Diamond, Fractured Cardinal Ruby, and enchanted with Arcanum of Torment.
Neck: Sindragosa’s Cruel Claw (277) Delicate Cardinal Ruby
Shoulders: Sanctified Lasherweave Shoulderpads (277) Fractured Cardinal Ruby, enchanted with Greater Inscription of the Axe.
Cloak: Vereesa’s Dexterity (272) Fractured Cardinal Ruby
Chest: Sanctified Lasherweave Raiment (277) Fractured Cardinal Ruby, Rigid Dragon’s Eye (JC gem), enchanted with powerful stats.
Bracers: Toskk’s Maximized Wristguard’s (277) Rigid King’s Amber, enchanted with Greater Assault.
Gloves: Aldriana’s Gloves of Secrecy (277) Fractured Cardinal Ruby x 2, enchanted with Precision
Belt: Astrylian’s Sutured Cinch (277) Nightmare tear, Delicate Cardinal Ruby x 2, and of course a belt buckle.
Legs: Sanctifited Lasherweave Legguards (277) Fractured Cardinal Ruby, Rigid King’s Amber, enchanted with Icescale Leg Armor.
Feet: Frostbitten Fur Boots (277) Rigid King’s Amber x 2, enchanted with Icewalker.
Ring 1: Frostbrood Sapphire Ring (277) Delicate Cardinal Ruby
Ring 2: Ashen Band of Endless Vengeance (277, req exalted ashen verdict) Rigid King’s Amber
Weapon: Oathbinder, Charge of the Ranger General (284) Fractured Dragon’s Eye(JC gem), Fractured Cardinal Ruby, Rigid Dragon’s Eye(JC gem), and enchanted with Berserking.
Trinket 1: Deathbringer’s Will (277)
Trinket 2: Herkuml War Token (264)
Idol: Idol of the Crying Moon (264)
Total gems needed: 8 Fractured Cardinal Ruby’s, 5 Delicate Cardinal Ruby’s, 5 Rigid King’s Amber, 2 Rigid Dragon’s Eyes, 1 Fractured Dragon’s Eye, 1 Nightmare tear, 1 Relentless Earthsiege Diamond.
Note: if you’re not a jewl crafter these gems will need to be changed to suit what you can obtain, so just replace the dragon’s eyes with the normal epic version of that same cut. This will also effect the outcome of the stats given by the set so some tweaking will be required to make it perfect.
Final thoughts:
Thank you very much for reading the guide I wrote up. It took me a few hours and a couple cross referencing between several websites and theorycraft programs to come up with this 4,265 word guide. Take everything you read as it is, the opinion of people who are entitled to their own opinions, as well we are all only humans so there might be some mistakes in this guide. Don’t float entirely on the work of this guide, not everything here will work perfectly for your personal preferences for your feral druid. But most of these have been proven by world ranking druids who know what they’re talking about. I hope you enjoy it, and it helps you in even the most minor way possible. <3
