I recently got another eight solid state drives in for my second Poweredge R710 (“Lucid”), but was getting a “Virtual disk creation failed!” error when creating the array. Even after wiping the drives of partitions and data, I was still getting the error.
The old configuration was still on the card, and it will (seemingly) not let you create a new array when there are missing disks from a current configuration. The disks were not part of a foreign configuration. To get past this error, you need to clear the current configuration by pressing F2 from the first tab (“VD Mgmt”) and selecting “Clear config”.
This error was on a LSI/Dell Perc H700, but it is possible to receive it on any MegaRAID/LSI controller.
